2003/2004 Girls Varsity Team

2003 was a busy time for the Reign Varsity and it was hard to get the updates posted. We want to put a finished on the varsity squad that for 4 years was probably the most talented team on the local AAU circuit. They successfully won 90 percent of the tournaments they participated in. An astounding record for a crew of mainly six or so girls. Most Every player has received a scholarship to play at the college level. The others are still in high school. These girls have been fine representatives and pioneers for the club and hopefully spring boards and role models of success in the sport for the of the younger kids in the reign organization. I can't tell you how much i enjoyed being a part and working with this group. Let me list some of the latest information about these kids.

These players along with a lot of supporting guest players like, Jenny Deyoung [Northwest College], Carly Koeble [Kennedy], Shireen Mansoori [Redmond], Markia Mitchell [Cleveland High], Dexeidra Brewer, Decatur, and Alex Tosti [Redmond]. Without the help of these players over the years in select tournaments we would not have achieved the success we had. Thank you ladies for all the help.

2005 UPDATE
We have to update the information on these ladies now and then so we don't forget where we came from as an organization. I don't have info on all the past players but I do on most of them so i'll take it from the top of the list above.
Keasha Beard, New Mexico State, The teams struggling a bit this year. With a new coach and a lot of new players their trying to find their stride. It looks like the team would be happy with around a 500 finish and with some new taller recruits coming in next year maybe to finish up in the top five of their conference. As of now Keasha's still working her way into the line up and has had a few 20 minuet games to her credit.
Darnellia Russell, North Seattle C.C, The teams in this league are just getting started with their conference play. they had an excellent non- conference record but are off to an 0-2 start in conference play. I am not sure how the team will finish this do to the fact they only have about 9 players. Dee is having a great freshman start leading the league in steals and in the top 5 in scoring. She hasn't lost a step.
Ashlie Pruitt, Seattle University, Started playing Soccer and Basketball for the school in 2003 but injury in the pre season forced her to red shirt the 2004 season. Fortunately the team is tough and had a excellent year reaching the quarters of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Ashlie should be ready after successful surgery to claim a spot on the 2005 team. As far as basketball, we'll have to see if playing two sports in college is worth the extra pain.
Delaney Conway, Portland State University, After red shirting her freshman year had an excellent start to the 2004 season working her way off the bat into the starting rotation but not unlike New Mexico State, had growing pains with a new coach and some players maybe not understanding what she wanted, has landed them around the bottom of their conference. With new recruits coming in and a solid year with the new coach they hope to turn things around in 2005. Delaney, hanging on to that starting spot has helped anchor that team holding the third place spot in scoring.
Kanika Rogers, University of Evansville, Indiana, Putting her work in for the Purple Aces Kanika is in her third year trying to help that team along. She joined the team this year after transferring from another school. Getting her opportunity to work at the D1 Level has agreed with her landing a spot in the starting line up. Kanika was home over Xmas was looking in fine form from the workouts but the team at 8-7, has some work left to do.
Brianna Thompson, Portland State University, What can I say, burning it up in the SWAC Conference in Idaho where she lead the league in scoring and redounding decided to make her presence know at the D1 level joining old Tukwila Reign teammate Delaney Conway at Portland State. Were still waiting to she what she can do as she had to red shirt the 2004 season because of transfer rules. But she has three strong years left and seems ready to go to work.
Leitawsha Bronson, Morgan State, Maryland, Traveling way across the country Leitawsha decided to head to the east coast on a Track and Field scholarship but actually ended up being the starting center on the basketball team, figure that one out. The team is struggling having only won one game but I'm confident with a little recruiting help they can get that situation turned around.
Carly Koeble, University of Portland, Still playing hard at Kennedy High School, Carly has worked herself into a scholarship at U.O.P. for 2005. We want to congratulate her for her efforts and we'll be watching.

For me the last few years have been probably some of the most fun times. It's been a long, expensive run. but I'm at the end of the tunnel. I have a daughter on this list and i have enjoyed watching all the success she has had along with the success of the other young ladies and the friendships i have made with the other coaches, college coaches and the parents are unforgettable. I hope that all these players as well as the ones we played against move on up and have success, so as I'm sitting on the couch watching TV or reading the sports page i can say hey!!, I remember her. As i have the pleasure of closing out the era in print of the varsity squad i will enjoy bringing in a new era of the Reign. The younger girls are currently having their own success and are ready to represent.

Winter 2002
You probably think gee they haven't had anything to say since January, What's Up!!!. It's been a topsy turvy year with some news i don't even want to mention. But I do look forward to having some info coming up soon as we try to get some of these girls to the next level.

Darnellia Russell Player of the Week
It's hard to slow these players down once they get rolling. We haven't said much about this young lady but the fact that week in and week out she's pushing her high school team back into contention for another birth in the state tournament. Absolutely one of the finest guards in this state (check out her stats) we want to recognize Darnellia Russell for being selected Seattle Times Player of the Week for her role in keeping the 4th ranked Roosevelt Roughriders on point.
1- 08-02
Brianna Thompson Player of the Week
Not to be outdone we have to add yet another player to the list. Another young lady who seems to be carrying her team, Brianna Thompson playing for the 4a Tahoma Bears has grabbed yet another accolade South County Journal Player of the Week. What can we say, averaging somewhere around the late teens or early twenty's a game and so many double doubles the girl is just out of control down there in the SPSL north league.
1- 07-02
Keasha Beard Player of the Week
Well were starting out the year 2002 in correct fashion with one of our varsity girl players taking the first award of the year. This young sophomore from Seattle has been working hard all this season in attempt to help her team get to state. We want to make sure she gets her prop's, so we now want to congratulate Keasha Beard for making the Seattle Times Player of the Week for her role (25 pts.) in defeating the 3rd ranked Roosevelt Roughriders in the 4a girls high school game of the week.

Kanika Rogers signs with the University of Evansville
Alright the news seem to keep topping itself. Really all the news of accomplishment for these young ladies is special in every way for them and this organization but this news is in part one of the crowning achievements of this club. Kanika Rogers our star center from Garfield High has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Evansville Purple Aces, Evansville, Indiana. We cant say enough about her opportunity to play D1 ball. The club worked hard last season in an effort to place ourselves in the best position to showcase our players. Since our trip to AAU Nationals last summer a lot of doors have opened up for the players. The exposure received form just that tournament has meant lot's of letters from colleges around the country for our juniors and senior. As our only senior i want to extend my congrats to her as she continues on and hopefully pioneers the way for our juniors and sophomores next season.

Brianna Thompson, 4A State Soccer Champion
We want to make sure we recognize our players for not only basketball, but other sport achievements and academics. So at this time we congratulate one of our star varsity forwards, Brianna Thompson and the Tahoma Bears for taking 1st Place in the WIAA State Soccer 4A Championships.

Kanika Rogers receiving interest from University of Evansville, Indiana
Kanika Rogers due to her play at Nationals last summer drew attention from several coaches including the head coach from the University of Evansville. Kanika took a trip down to the school and the coach Tricia Cullop later flew out in September to again watch her work out and expressed interest in having her attend the university. Congratulations to her and hopes that she will step up on this offer or any other offer she will receive this and or next year.
Congratulations to the Reign Varsity Squad for Taking 5th Place in the 16u
AAU National Shootout Tournament.

A Little Reflection.
Well it's been a long season for the Reign org. The girls have played a lot of tournaments. We always try to play the girls up. What that does is it affords the girls who can and want to the opportunity to play on older or younger teams through out those weekends. So the players get a lot of actual game play and it's seems to reflect on their tournament records. This was the first year we have had a Varsity team. We had a couple of hiccups but for the season has been very successful for us. We have challenged some tough teams in both u16 and u17/18.
We also have had some very rewarding scrimmages against some very good squads. We appreciate the invitation of those organizations to have us come in and work out with their teams. We think in lieu of practices at this level, game like scrimmages best prepare our team for tournament play and our plan next year is to setup more of those scrimmages with the top clubs in the area. One of our theory's is ( the game is the best teacher ) so we believe in more game time and with our open style of play it forces and we encourage our players to make their own decisions on the court according to the situations presented at the moment.
It works well for our org. and for players interested in that style of play, look us up. Next year we plan to take the show on the road, entering more showcase tournaments. But this year we have a little work left before we close out in July. We have the opportunity to go to the AAU National and the Las Vegas Grand Finale. We are planning to attend both. This should give us the chance to evaluate where we need to be as we showcase next year.
