Winter Classic Results
Seattle, WA - The Tukwila Reign teams go 8-4 during the WTA Winter Classic this weekend at Summit High School. The 8th grade team finished 3rd and the 6th grade team took fourth.
The 8th grade team came out strong on Saturday taking away two wins. The first game against Lynden was a surprise for their coaches and team. Lynden had captured the junior varsity league in Blaine and expected to give the Reign a better challenge. The Reign opened up a 14-2 lead and stretched it to 26-8 at halftime. Our defense proved too much for Lynden throughout the game resulting in 16 Reign steals. At the final buzzer the Reign were up 57-12. Tayler Weiks led all scorers with 16 points to go with her 5 steals. Michelle Wnek added 11 points, 4 steals and 3 assists. Lexi Petersen finished with 8 points and 2 blocks. McKenzie Cooper lande 6 points, Sabra Sproul 5, Jordyn Richardson 5, Kristyn Ross 4, and Danielle Bojorquez 2.
Following an 8-2 lead Marysville fought back to tie the score at 10-10 before the Reign slipped to a 17-15 halftime lead in their second game. Sabra iced the game with a steal producing lay up with 14:21 remaining in the game with the Reign on top 39-23. The team hit on 22 of 53 attempts from the field. MacKenzie took high game honors with 18 points as she racked up another double-double snatching 16 rebounds. Jordyn and Lexi each scored 8 points, Sabra - 6, Michelle 5, Tayler -4, Kristyn 2, Danielle 0.
In the semifinal game the ECBA Elite came with a few new players ready to play as the outmatched the Reign for three quarters of the game. The Reign jumped out quick to a 9-6 lead, but ECBA reacted with a 10-point run to lead at the half 18-13. Lexi got her fourth foul with 12:51 remaining in the game and had to sit while her team fought back to tie the game 25-25 midway through the second half. Michelle tied the game again at 29-29 on a lay up with 6:17 remaining. Upon Lexis reentry into the game she swished two consecutive three pointers to knot the game at 35-35 with only 2:35 on the clock. ECBA answered with a couple quick baskets following Reign turnovers then found their way to the free throw line to go 6 of 8 in the closing seconds to sew up the game and advance to the championship. Lexi finished with 10 points, MacKenzie 8, Tayler 7, Kristyn 5, Sabra 2, Danielle 2, Michelle 2, and Jordyn 1. The Reign finished one of their worst games shooting only 11 of 51 from the field.
The Reign quickly bounced back to take third place by defeating Mukilteo Rain 53-24. The team pressured the ball and couldnt miss a shot in this one to take a 27-7 halftime lead. Danielle led all scorers with 13 points, Tayler 12, Michelle 9, Lexi 8, Kristyn 6, Jordyn 4, MacKenzie 1, and Sabra 0.
The 6th grade team played excellent this weekend going 3-1. The only set back was the short list of players this weekend. Following three straight wins the team fell short in their quarterfinal match up against Lake Lightning, 20-10. Trailing 8-5 at halftime, the team couldnt find a basket in the second half. The Reign shot only 2 of 21 field goals in the second half. It was unbelievable that the referees werent making traveling calls. The Lightning scored on three non-calls in the opening of the second half to put the game out of reach. Cierra Levias finished with 6 points, Gina Galoia 2, Diondra Alexander 1, Raven Brooks 1, Laisha Tisino 0 and Jazalynn Omlid 0.
The team made it to the quarterfinals by beating the Brier Shotcallers 40-20. Trailing early 11-10, the team bounced back to take a 21-13 halftime lead. Gina led all scorers with 12 points, Cierra racked up her third double-double of the weekend scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, Jenna Bojorquez 8, Jazalynn 4, Diondra 4, Raven 2, and Laisha 0.
The team opened the weekend beating Wolfpack Green 38-25 on 16 of 57 field goals and 39 rebounds. Shantell Jackson led all scorers with 14 points, Cierra added her first double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, Jenna 5 points, Gina 3, Raven 3, Laisha 0 and Jazalynn 0.
Leading 15-7 at halftime, Lake Lightning stormed back to trail 17-13 mid way through the second half before falling to the Reign 28-25. Cierra racked up the second of her three double-doubles for the weekend hitting 10 points, taking down 12 rebounds, and blocking four shots to lead her team to victory. Gina finished with 7 points, Jenna 6, Diondra 3, Raven 2, Jazalynn 0, and Laisha 0.
The 7th grade team opened up against Mukilteo Rain and came up short in the shooting department to fall 36-28. The team couldnt buy a basket as only 12 of 66 shots found the bottom of the net. The Rain shot 20 less shots, but managed to hit on 15 of 44. The Reigns three top scorers hit on a mere 9 of 45 from the field. Purshall Brown led the team with 8 points, Emily Graver 7, Jasmine McCleave 7, Patrice Toston 4, Tre Onna Mitchell 2, Aleina Galoia 0, and Aspen Thornton 0.
In game two the shooting woes continued as Auburn-Riverside took advantage in winning 42-39. The Reign stole the ball on three occasions in the closing moments of the game and came up short each time. Emily hit a three pointer to tie the game 20-20 with 3:21 left in the first half. Patrice led the team with 9 points, Purshall 7, Jasmine 7, Emily 6, Aleina 4, Tre Onna 3, and Aspen 2.
On thing about this team, they are getting off the shots. On Sunday against Team Tacoma the team went 19 of 71 from the field to win 41-31. Emily went 7 of 16 to rack up 14 points to lead the Reign win. The team also played better defense in creating 23 turnovers and they out rebounded Team Tacoma 36-20. Jasmine added 9 points and 14 boards to boost the team to victory. Tre Onna added 8 points, Aspen 4, Patrice 4, Aleina 2, and Purshall 0.
The Reign jumped on the Blues 11-1 and Patrice scored 9 of her game high 15 points in the first half as the team built a 20-13 halftime lead. The team hit 17 of 55 from the field to down the Blues 36-22 and at the same time even out the weekend 2 wins and 2 loses. Tre Onna finished with 6 points, Jasmine 5, Aleina 4, Purhsall 4, Emily 2, and Aspen 0.
The Reigns next court appearance will be following Christmas in the JD Hillis Memorial Tournament in Olympia on December 26th.
